The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced that the current flu vaccine does not protect against two strains of the illness that have caused almost half of this year's documented flu cases. Flu vaccines are prepared approximately a year in advance and have to predict which strains will prove the most virulent at the time.

Officials have cautioned that the vaccine still provides some protection against influenza, even if the newer strains are not specifically covered.
