Ask the expert: Align unit and nursing councils with the organizations initiative
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, February 19, 2008
This week, a reader asks how to demonstrate that the unit-based and nursing council activities align with the organizational initiative. Read the response from our advisor Barbara Wadsworth, RN, MSN, MBA, CNAA,BC, vice president and CNO at Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, PA.
Q: In Force of Magnetism 1: Quality of nursing leadership, how do you demonstrate that the unit-based and nursing council activities align with the organizational initiative?
A: To clearly demonstrate how unit-based and nursing council activities align with the organizational initiative in Force 1: Quality of nursing leadership, standardize the format of meeting minutes to highlight a common framework. Maintain this framework organizationwide to help appraisers visualize the flow of ideas horizontally and vertically. Include the titles of the individuals who are present at meetings, and to ensure that the CNO represents all nurses, introduce the facility's strategic goals at a joint planning meeting of all nursing leadership. Extend an invitation to nursing representatives in all settings in the organization to quarterly joint-planning meetings. Inclusiveness in decision-making within this group reinforces the influence of the CNO over all nurses. All collaborative agreement about which councils or committees will lead individual initiatives also adds clarity to the strategic goals that you create.
