Washington hospitals and nurse organizations reach staffing agreement

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, February 12, 2008

A landmark agreement was recently signed between Washington state hospitals and nurse organizations to allow staffing plans to be developed by hospital administrators in conjunction with nursing staff. The agreement was signed by the Washington State Hospital Association, Northwest Organization of Nurse Executives, Service Employees International Union Healthcare 1199NW, United Staff Nurses Union, Local 141 United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, and the Washington State Nurses Association.

This first-in-the-nation staff agreement arranges for nurse administrators at each hospital in the state of Washington to work collaboratively with nursing staff to develop staffing plans that support staff and patient safety. The parties will also continue to work collaboratively to identify ways to improve care delivery, promote best practices on staffing policies and quality care, and reduce medical errors.
