Ask the expert: Selecting quality indicators to measure
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, February 5, 2008
This week, a reader asks how to select which nurse-sensitive quality indicators to measure. Read the response from our advisor Dorothy Anne Garman, RN, MSN, nursing consultant in Newport, RI.
Q: How do you select which nurse-sensitive quality indicators we should measure?
A: An essential component for the nurse-sensitive indicator selection process is to review indicators--ones that can be categorized as nurse-sensitive--that are presently being measured in the organization.
For example, nurse-sensitive indicators could include adult smoking cessation and advice/counseling for acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, and pneumonia. Another key opportunity for finding nurse-sensitive indicators is to review your organization's patient satisfaction survey to see what patients are saying about their hospital experience, especially with regard to issues of pain management, communication, safety, and education.
