Nursing students in West Virginia rank last in passing average

Stressed Out Nurses Weekly, February 4, 2008

Nationwide, about 85% of students who take the NCLEX exam pass it. In West Virginia, that number drops to 81%, which ranks as the lowest of the 50 states.

A combination of a shortage of qualified faculty, low salaries for nursing faculty, and admission requirements contribute to the unenviable ranking, officials said. According to The Charleston (WV) Gazette, 23 full-time nursing faculty positions were vacant as of last week.

Several schools fell below the required 80% passing rank in 2007, including Alderson-Broaddus College (48%), West Virginia University Tech (56%), and Davis & Elkins College (79.5%). Programs that fall below the required number must submit plans for improvement to the state board.
