To help healthcare workers communicate information on various conditions and illnesses to patients whose first language is not English, a Missouri company is upgrading its translation Web site and making it easier to use.

The Missouri Hospital Association's Web site, www.healthtranslations.com, was launched in 2003 through a grant from the Tenet Healthcare Foundation, headquartered in Dallas, TX. It provides information on disease management, disaster preparedness, and medical conditions in more than 30 languages (including Arabic, Russian, and Vietnamese). Upgrades will aim to make the site more user-friendly and simpler to navigate.

The translation tools are pertinent in Missouri, which has more than 194,000 foreign-born residents. The association says non-English-speaking patients will receive improved care through the Web site's resources.
