Princess Leia kicks off designation journey
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, January 29, 2008
After conducting a gap analysis and submitting its application for ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) designation, Memorial Hospital in Belleville, IL, held an MRP kickoff meeting for managers and directors with a Star Wars movie theme. Nurse educators created a cardboard rocket ship and glued 14 CDs (each representing one of the 14 Forces of Magnetism) to the spherical-shaped cardboard.
"The rocket ship looked as though the 14 Forces were in orbit, and we had a huge red magnet (cut out of cardboard) in the center of the orbiting Forces," says Marian White, RN, MSN, BC, MRP project coordinator.
With the rocket ship suspended from the ceiling, the organization played music from Star Wars and displayed the 14 Forces on a projector, slowly scrolling across the screen "just like the beginning of Star Wars," says White. "Our vice president of nursing dressed as Princess Leia, and we had light sabers, themed table cloths, and food. It generated a lot of energy and provided initial education about MRP designation."
