Ask the expert: Share individual achievements
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, January 29, 2008
This week, a reader asks whether it is worthwhile to share individual achievements in the written documentation. Read the response from advisor Elise Gropper, PhD, APRN,BC, CPHQ, president of Gropper & Associates, Inc., Coral Springs, FL.
Q: Should individual achievements be shared in the written documentation?
A: Individual nurses, nonnursing staff (e.g., medical staff), and organizational leaders all have stories to share, so get the word out that you are collecting evidence for the written documentation.
Here is an example of how important this can be when searching for evidence to feature in your written documentation: One organization was searching for examples of cultural diversity, which it believed was an area of weakness and thought that the organization practiced in an extremely homogeneous environment. But staff were asked to share individual stories that illustrated cultural diversity and support for diversity. The stories that were submitted were so voluminous that the organization was able to develop an entire book of examples.
