Ask the expert: Should nonnurse interdisciplinary teams attend nursing celebrations?
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, January 15, 2008
This week, a reader asks whether a celebration recognizing preceptors and mentors should include those outside of nursing. Read the response from our advisor, Gina Boring, MSN, RN, director for the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® at Aultman Health Foundation in Canton, OH.
Q: Should a nursing professional development council hosting a celebration to recognize all mentors and preceptors include those outside of nursing?
A: Projects taken on by shared decision-making councils often take on a life of their own and creep outside of their originally intended circles. In this case, it's a great chance for your nursing staff to champion a celebration that recognizes the entire interdisciplinary team. Build the circle of trust and respect every chance you get and recognize other disciplines when the opportunity rises--all of us collectively build excellence at the bedside.
The primary focuses of your nursing governance councils have to be nursing-related issues. But don't hesitate to take an occasional trip off of the beaten path to recognize the efforts around you--you won't hurt anything by moving forward with this celebration. And remember that you're building a culture and those being recognized will respect nursing for taking the extra effort to include them.
