When attendance is mandatory

All organizations mandate particular education components for employees. These types of required learning activities are usually conducted on a regular (i.e., annual) schedule. Mandatory programs include those dealing with safety issues, infection control, violence in the workplace, and so on. Here are tips for conducting mandatory training:
- Organize attendance. Many organizations have arranged mandatory learning activities on a monthly basis. If you do this, make sure your orientation program coincides with the day(s) that mandatory training is being offered. Arranging a particular day(s) each month allows employees and orientees alike to fulfill mandatory requirements.
- Blend it together. Your mandatory classes are probably a blend of classroom, demonstration, and self-learning methods (including e-learning). Set up a classroom and arrange for didactic components and skills demonstrations to be offered at regular intervals throughout the day. Have a number of computers and other self-learning tools (e.g., video, DVD players) available, too.
- Incorporate competencies into your mandatory training events. This enables objective measurement and documentation of skill or knowledge accomplishment, not just that employees attended particular programs. Whenever possible, use a computerized system to track education attendance.
