A recent study says that nurses are spending too much time with equipment and not enough with patients, adding that this pattern could result in lower nurse retention rates and decreased hospital safety.

The study, named "Technology Drill Down," was carried out between March and May by the American Academy of Nursing. Funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the study included 25 hospitals and healthcare systems.

According to the research, the average nurse in a United States hospital spends only 30% of his or her time on patient care. Researchers recommended that hospital equipment be developed and tested by caregivers to ensure that the equipment was compatible with the needs of the caregiver and patient.
