Scholarships invest in the future of nursing

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, December 18, 2007

Baptist Health South Florida (BHSF) in Miami provides more than 200 scholarships a year to nursing students attending affiliated nursing schools. The health system recently offered $20,000 scholarships to 10 nursing students from the International University of Nursing (IUON) in St. Kitts so the students can pay for their last two semesters and transfer to Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, AZ. The students were chosen based on scholastic achievement, their response to a question about why they want a career in nursing, and after interviews held at BHSF. Helping educate well-trained nurses through scholarships is part of Baptist Health's strategy for investing in the future of nursing workforce, said the organization's President and CEO, Brian Keeley, in a statement. Once the scholarship recipients graduate from Grand Canyon and pass the required nursing board exams, they will work at a Baptist Health facility for at least three years. Two of Baptist Health's hospitals are ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® recipients--Baptist Hospital of Miami and South Miami Hospital.
