Nursing stories help guide the way to designation
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, December 18, 2007
John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, CA, recently underwent a site visit--the last phase on its journey to achieve ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation. After the site visit, Andrea Segura, RN, MSN, CNAA,BC, director nursing practice and operations, noticed that it's important for healthcare organizations pursuing designation not to underestimate the power nursing staff have when they share their stories.
"During our site visit, the appraisers looked for nurses to share stories that illustrated how the 14 Forces of Magnetism are embedded into their everyday nursing practice," says Segura. To help staff nurses practice sharing their stories, Segura recommends asking them three questions to help them prepare for the site visit:
- Why did you come to the organization?
- Why do you stay?
- What are the challenges to you as nurse at the bedside?
"Answers to these questions will guide you to areas of excellence and areas to work on during your journey toward designation," says Segura.
