Ask the expert: Successful educational strategies on designation

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, December 18, 2007

This week, a reader asks for successful strategies on educating staff about the journey toward ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) designation. Read the response from our advisor Meryl Montgomery, RN, MSN, director learning center and MRP project director at Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon, GA.

Q: What are successful strategies for educating staff about the journey toward MRP designation?

A: Our primary method of educating nursing staff on the MRP at Medical Center of Central Georgia was, and still is, participation and engagement (i.e., learning about shared governance through unit council participation and learning about research by being involved in a research project). We have completed many surveys, focus groups, and interviews with our nurses and we rely on their interaction and involvement to help us problem solve and to plan educational activities related to the 14 Forces of Magnetism.

Other successful strategies that have been helpful for us as we educate nursing staff about our journey toward designation include:

  • Bulletin boards reflecting the 14 Forces of Magnetism on every unit
  • Posters on units for nurses to jot down various ways the unit exemplifies each Force of Magnetism
  • Journal clubs and discussion groups
  • Open forums with the CNO
  • MRP items such as stickers, MRP T-shirts, and buttons
  • MRP reference manuals for each nursing unit
  • Nursing staff on steering committees
  • Revision of nurse orientation to reflect the Forces of Magnetism
  • MRP intranet site with reference information, professional opportunities, etc
  • MRP e-mails, flyers, computer-based education, and videos

When nurses are involved in the planning and implementation of ways to educate, they come up with innovative and interesting ways to present.
