Stressing this holiday season? Helpful tips to avoid the blues

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, December 11, 2007

The holiday season has arrived, and for many, the anxiety over shopping, cooking, and party planning can be overwhelming. According to Mark H. Rapaport, MD, chair of the department of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles--an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® facility redesignated in 2004--unrealistic expectations of family gatherings and holiday parties often lead to disappointment and depression around the holidays. To cope with holiday-related stress and to fully enjoy the season, Rapaport shared the following ideas in a recent press release:

  • Make an active effort not to worry so much about the details. Live in the moment as much as possible.
  • Don't lose sight of the meaningful moments of the season. Look for them and be optimistic that you will find them.
  • Try to eat well and get enough rest.
  • Spend time with supportive and caring people.
  • Make a list and prioritize activities that are important to you. Make time for those activities, and consider whether you must complete everything on the list.
  • Make time for yourself.
