Continuing education on the 14 Forces of Magnetism
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, December 11, 2007
To keep nursing staff educated on the 14 Forces of Magnetism, June Marshall, RN, MS, CNAA,BC, director, center for nurse excellence at Medical City Hospital and Medical City Children's Hospital in Dallas-an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) recipient in 2003-shares two activities that have been successful educational strategies to keep nursing staff informed about the Forces:
- The CNO and I both write articles related to the MRP for our monthly newsletter (City Nurses) that goes to all nurses in the organization. The CNO focuses on a topic related to sustaining an MRP environment, and I cover information related to a specific Force with examples from Medical City staff nurses that demonstrate how we meet that particular Force.
- In our standards of nursing practice council, we provided a brief case study and divided the staff into teams. For this competition, each team was asked to describe all 14 Forces of Magnetism that were present in the case study. The team that identified the most Forces and could describe how the case study met each Force they recognized, won the challenge. The teams did well at the exercise, with the winning team able to demonstrate all 14 Forces.
