With a growing number of nurses suffering from work-related injuries, Iowa hospitals have invested in patient-moving equipment.

When committee members at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids saw a rise in the number of worker compensation claims and back injuries, the facility purchased $430,000 worth of equipment, including lifts, earlier this month.

Other Iowa hospitals are already seeing the positive effects of such equipment. In 2003, University Hospitals in Iowa City purchased more than $600,000 in ergonomic equipment to help nurses safely move patients and has continued adding equipment as hospital units undergo renovations. Since then, worker compensation claims have reportedly dropped by 85%.
