Take control of performance improvement indicators

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, December 4, 2007

When deciding which nurse-sensitive performance improvement (PI) indicators to measure and benchmark, choose only those over which nursing has control. Data must be collected on nurse-sensitive indicators such as pressure ulcer prevalence, pressure ulcer occurrence, patient falls and patient falls with injury, patient satisfaction with pain management, patient education and nursing care, and other indicators over which nurses have control.

The CNO and the nursing leadership team must provide a nursing infrastructure to ensure that the staff nurse understands performance benchmarks and that corrective action plans are developed and implemented according to evidence-based practice. The nursing-unit-specific PI indicators should be part of the facility's overall quality indicator plan and are tracked and trended at the unit and organizationwide level.
