Information technology in the nursing world can enhance patient safety, nursing efficiency, and other areas of healthcare, suggests a new study by the American Academy of Nursing's (AAN) Workforce Commission.

The study notes than nurses typically spend less than one-third of the workday on direct patient care, due mainly to inefficient processes in the working environment. Using a grant by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the AAN launched a series of case studies on 25 hospitals and health systems. During the study, researchers identified more than 300 workflow issues that could be improved by the use of healthcare technology, including:

  • Medication administration
  • Documentation
  • Care delivery
  • Communication
