Resolving conflict among interdisciplinary teams

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, November 27, 2007

Creative conflict resolution activities and approaches among interdisciplinary teams are embedded in collegial and collaborative partnerships. Personnel policies and processes addressing conflict management involve all disciplines and ensure that all staff members' rights are respected. Consider the following example to create a process that promotes positive patient outcomes by encouraging staff to enjoy collaborative, mutually respectful relationships:

  • Nurses are becoming angry and frustrated at the slow response of pharmacy staff members to stat orders for medications and intravenous solutions. They resolve their intradepartmental conflict through open communication and education. They request a pharmacy staff member to speak to all nurses and do in-services on nursing units regarding changes in the structure of the pharmacy and how orders are processed. Following three months of training and positive patient responses from nurses and pharmacy staff, conflicts ease in most units.
