Restructuring a shared governance model

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, November 27, 2007

East Texas Medical Center (ETMC) in Tyler, TX--currently pursuing ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation--recently restructured its shared governance model to become one that resembles a five-point star star. The patient is now placed firmly in the center of the star, with unit councils, house councils, and the coordinating council branching out from the center. Each point of the star corresponds to the realms of research and education, leadership, quality, practice, and professional development. "Each unit council on the star model is responsible for addressing these realms during meetings and bringing any concerns or action plans to the corresponding house council," says Jennifer LeBlanc, RN, BSN, professional development coordinator.

ETMC's unit councils are all structured differently--some of the smaller nursing units have merged with another unit, while larger nursing units have many types of councils that are realm specific. "We gave unit councils full control of a structure that works best for them," says LeBlanc, "and so far this structure has worked out great."
