Ask the expert: Featuring nurses in a positive light

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, November 27, 2007

This week, a reader asks for ways to represent and highlight the image of nursing throughout the healthcare organization. Read the response from our advisor, Gina Boring, MSN, RN, director for the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® at Aultman Health Foundation in Canton, OH.

Q: How can we represent and highlight the image of nursing throughout the healthcare organization?

A: The ways in which the organization features its nurses is the key to fulfilling the sources of evidence for Force of Magnetism 12: Image of nursing. You can start by dedicating bulletin boards in your organization that recognize nurses for their achievements (e.g., advancement on the career ladder, professional publications, and contributions to patient care). Also showcase process improvement initiatives on bulletin boards.

Consider the following ways to profile nurses throughout the organization:

  • Place digital photos of nurses and their location in the facility on bulletin boards
  • Show nurses in a positive light through newsletters or other publications published by the facility
  • Publish community service activities in an annual report and profile the accomplishments of nursing service lines
  • Make updates about shared governance, research, and Magnet Recognition Program® activities available to staff on the nursing intranet site
