Successful residency program helps UHC win Champion Award
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, November 20, 2007
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN)--which represents baccalaureate and higher-degree nursing programs--recently awarded its 2007 Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Champion Award to University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC). UHC offers programs and services for academic medical centers to improve clinical, operational, and patient safety performance, and the Champion Award is conferred on organizations and practice settings that place a high value on registered nurses earning BSN degrees. The AACN reports that UHC exemplifies this ethos, particularly with its national post-baccalaureate residency project that helps student nurses make the transition from students to practicing nurses. The residency program has been shown to increase the retention rate of new nurses, and 36 organizations in 24 states currently follow the project. UCH reports that in 2006, the turnover rates for new graduates who had completed the residency project were 9.7% compared with the national average of 27.1%.
