Ask the expert: Finding evidence for the challenging areas

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, November 13, 2007

This week, a readers asks which of the 14 Forces of Magnetism is the most difficult to exemplify with sources of evidence. Read the response below from our advisor, Barbara Hannon, RN, MSN, CPHQ, coordinator for the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® at University of Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA.

Q: What is the most difficult Force of Magnetism to find evidence to exemplify?

A: I find there are three Forces that are challenging to showcase in the evidence. These are Force 5: Professional models of care, Force 6: Quality of care, and Force 7: Quality improvement.

When tackling Force 5: Professional models of care, read it very carefully and do not make a mistake in your explanations of care models versus care delivery models.

In Force 6: Quality of care, there are 28 sources of evidence covering quality, ethical practice for nurses' rights, safety, and evidence-based practice. When you provide examples for this Force, make sure that every example is truly implemented throughout your organization.

Force 7: Quality improvement concerns the entire quality structure, and part of the expectation for this Force is that you collect nursing sensitive indicators at the unit level. So Force 7 is all about how you collect these quality indicators at the unit level, how you trend them, the databases you use, and how you integrate all this quality and performance improvement into the unit level so direct-care nurses know their accountability for quality care.
