Pediatric pre-and post-surgery care in the spotlight

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, October 31, 2007

An October 22 article in Physician's Weekly placed the spotlight on the importance of improving postoperative outcomes in children.

The article examined the results of a recent study that looked at the ADVANCE Intervention program, which is designed to prepare children and their parents for surgical procedures and their post-surgery care.

The program is spearheaded by Zeev Kain, MD, MBA, MA, professor of anesthesiology, pediatrics, and child psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine. The results of the four-year study found that those children who were in the program reported lower levels of anxiety before the surgery and were much likely to be discharged earlier than those non-program participants.
