Running a successful hospitalist program

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, October 31, 2007

Forming a successful hospitalist program, or running an existing one, requires a significant amount of planning. In failing programs, the shortcomings are traced back to the following fundamental failures:

  • Neglecting to consult with the hospital and medical staff members to identify the need for a hospitalist program
  • Failing to make a financial analysis and develop a business plan
  • Lacking defined goals or specific benchmarks to compare the growth or challenges the program encounters

These three issues go hand-in-hand, and organizers of the hospitalist program need to address them during the early stages of development to ensure success.
