Hospitalist shortage? Family practice physicians may meet your staffing needs and bring new skills
Hospitalist Leadership Connection, September 26, 2007
Any director of a growing hospitalist practice knows how hard it is to find adequately qualified physicians to meet the needs of the program.
But ask any family practitioner working in hospital medicine about his or her job hunt, and most will tell you it can be a challenge.
So why aren't more hospitalist programs bridging this apparent divide?
There are a few reasons. For example, big recruiting companies may overlook or decline to consider family practice physicians for positions they are trying to fill. Additionally, some hospitals discourage family practice physicians' inclusion in hospitalist programs, and at hospitals where they are included, other specialties may not treat these practitioners as peers.
But hospitalist practices willing to bridge this disconnect may discover the benefit of a ready supply of skilled physicians.
