MDs sometimes discount complaints of side effects

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, September 5, 2007

A recent survey of 650 patients published in the August issue of Drug Safety shows that a majority believe their physician discounted their complaints of side effects from prescribed medication, according to an August 28 Washington Post article.

The survey, conducted by researchers from the University of California at San Diego, singled out side effects of statins but said the problem extends to other types of medications. When physicians ignore or dismiss complaints of side effects, they are most likely not going to report them, which can skew the Food and Drug Administration's review of the medication, according to the article.
