MI hospitals opt to list procedure prices online

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, August 29, 2007

Beginning in January 2008, Michigan's nonprofit hospitals will list the prices for various clinical procedures as a result of consumer and business demands for more information on healthcare costs, according to an August 16 article in the Detroit Free Press.

David Seaman, executive vice president of the Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHHA), which represents Michigan's 146 nonprofit hospitals, is quoted in the article as saying that the facilities will begin by posting prices for at least 50 tests, operations, and procedures (e.g., CT-scans), that compose as much as 80% of the hospitals' business.

According to the article, the association must determine which prices the hospitals will list. Then, the MHHA will sponsor a voluntary hospital price database on the association's Web site, www.mha.org.
