ABIM approves formal credential for hospitalists
Hospitalist Leadership Connection, August 22, 2007
According to a Society of Hospital Medicine breaking news alert dated August 2, the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) has given the go-ahead for a designated recognition for hospital medicine-focused practitioners. The designation will be administered through the ABIM's maintenance of certification program.
Now that the certification has been approved, the ABIM will submit a formal proposal to the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) for review. SHM reports that ABMS approval is expected by September 2008.
The event marks the ABIM's first foray into offering any type of recognition for a subset of internal medicine, and is the culmination of three years of work by SHM and ABIM, according to the news alert.
SHM's CEO, Larry Wellikson, MD, is quoted in the news alert as saying, "ABIM's decision is an acknowledgment of the unique focus of hospitalists, and recognizes the unusually rapid growth and development of hospital medicine."
