Correction to last week's Ask the Expert feature

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, August 1, 2007

Editor's note: Last week's Ask the Expert contained an error. As a result, the question and answer runs below as it should have appeared. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Q: If a nurse practitioner does not have discharge privileges but has done the discharge summary and the hospitalist has signed behind him or her, do we bill for that service under the hospitalist name/number?

A: To maximize billing (e.g., Medicare), the services should be billed under the physician as long as the physician saw the patient at discharge (which he or she must do under the scenario stated above). It should be clear somewhere in the chart, in my opinion, that the physician examined the patient on the day of discharge.

Kenneth G. Simone, DO, founder and president of Hospitalist and Practice Solutions, which specializes in hospitalist program development, fielded this question. He can be reached at ksimone@sunburypc.com. Send your questions to mcoler@hcpro.com.
