Report examines rise of hospitalists in CA

The California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF), an independent organization dedicated to improving healthcare delivery and finance in that state, has funded research through the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) that studies factors contributing to the growth of hospitalists.
According to the foundation's Web site (www.chcf.org), hospitalists have proven their ability to reduce costs and patients' length of stay. As their roles expand into other areas (e.g., perioperative, intensive care, and emergency), they are being tasked with contributing to systemwide efficiency, quality, and safety improvements.
