Technology helps San Antonio hospitals reduce IV medication errors

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, July 25, 2007

Nurses and medical staff at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio, TX, are using computerized infusion pumps to help catch IV medication errors before they reach the patient, according to a report by San Antonio station KENS 5-TV.

Physicians and nurses enter the prescription information into the pump, which checks for errors, unusual dosages, and other abnormalities. An alarm sounds if there is a problem. The system is designed to provide an additional checkpoint for medical staff to verify the correct medication type and dosage before administering it to the patient, according to the report.
