When faced with the challenge of improving physician performance at your institution, clearly setting and communicating expectations goes a long way. Following is a summary of the steps necessary to create great performance expectations:

  • Define your physician performance framework
  • Select behaviors that define your culture
  • Identify key performance issues
  • Articulate each desired cultural and performance behavior as an expectation
  • Determine how you will get buy-in to implement the expectations
  • Define how you might use that expectation to improve physician performance
