When faced with the challenge of improving physician performance at your institution, clearly setting and communicating expectations goes a long way. Following is a summary of the steps necessary to create great performance expectations:
- Define your physician performance framework
- Select behaviors that define your culture
- Identify key performance issues
- Articulate each desired cultural and performance behavior as an expectation
- Determine how you will get buy-in to implement the expectations
- Define how you might use that expectation to improve physician performance
