AHRQ lists statistics of hospitalized patients with mental health disorders

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, June 20, 2007

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) found that almost 7.6 million adult hospital stays in the U.S. involved depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, other mental health disorders, or substance use related disorders. The report estimates that 1.9 million hospital stays were comprised of a mental health or substance abuse problem; the remaining 5.7 million patients had other conditions in conjunction with these disorders. Other findings:

Nearly 21% of most mental health and substance abuse disorder patients were older, being treated primarily for dementia.

240,000 women hospitalized for childbirth or pregnancy had mental health or substance abuse problems.

Suicide attempts accounted for nearly 179,000 hospital stays; 93% of which involved a mental health condition, mood disorders, and/or substance abuse.
