Strategies for leading a hospitalist program

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, May 23, 2007

Often, hospitalist program directors, sometimes simply called lead hospitalists, are selected for the position by virtue of their tenure or experience in the program, and not necessarily because they are trained to lead the team.

An article in the May issue of Hospitalist Management Advisor (HMA), published by HCPro, asked experienced hospitalists for a list of things they wish they knew when they took on their first job as a director, and what they think every hospitalist aspiring to a leadership role should learn.

Richard Rohr, MD, FACP, director of the hospitalist program at Milford (CT) Hospital, says in the article that medical education is lacking in regard to training physicians to work collaboratively and manage people. "A hospitalist program director has to work hard to promote teamwork and cooperation," he says. "Business schools put a great emphasis on this, but medical schools don't."
