UConn hospital staffers use good catches to prevent errors

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, April 25, 2007

Staff members at John Dempsey Hospital at the University of Connecticut (UConn) use a "good catch" system to prevent errors before they happen, according to the UConn Advance, a weekly newsletter for faculty and staff.

Staff members who spot a potential error and report it are nominated for recognition, according to the Advance. Awards are given out every two months and include a pin workers can wear while on the job.

The program encourages all staff members at UConn to participate. For example, a facilities management worker was recently recognized after he spotted an oxygen line being pulled while a patient was being moved.
