Discharge data delays lead to safety concerns in UK

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, April 11, 2007

A National Health Service (NHS) survey shows that hospitals in the United Kingdom are not sending discharge information to the next provider of care in a timely manner, according to a March 29 BBC article. About 70% of 651 physicians polled reported that discharge orders and other patient information were not communicated in the two-day time frame outlined by regulation.

The survey also found that when the information is conveyed, it is often unclear or incomplete. Nearly 40% of the physicians surveyed said the delays led to risks for the patient. Some 58% of physician respondents reported the problems with delayed or incomplete discharge data meant clinical care was compromised.

The NHS is a London-based independent organization that aims to serve both patients and health professionals in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
