Use hospitalists for evidence-based treatment of MI patients

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, March 7, 2007

A recent "Tip of the Week" published by HCPro's Hospitalist Management Advisor states that hospitalists are well-positioned to ensure that myocardial infarction (MI) patients get the best of evidence-based medicine.

The current treatment recommendations for patients undergoing a percutaneous coronary intervention are aspirin, beta blockers, clopidogrel, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, heparin, and glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors, according to the article.

At discharge, patients should receive all of these treatments, as well as statins and aldosterone antagonists. Smoking cessation counseling and cardiac rehabilitation should also begin at discharge, when appropriate.
