More hospitals welcome technology

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, February 28, 2007

According to an article in the February 18 Chicago Tribune, today's hospitals increasingly offer patients Wi-Fi Internet access, patient-information portals, and patient blogs, alleviating the traditional isolation patients often felt during hospitalization.

Further, many electronic gadgets (e.g., iPods) traditionally banned from hospitals due to concerns about their interference with hospital equipment now pose little or no problem, and are becoming more commonplace, the article asserts.

The article cites the University of Chicago's Comer Children's Hospital as one institution leading the way in welcoming patients' wireless and high-tech gadgets.

Upon opening in February 2005, Comer Children's Hospital outfitted each room with an entertainment and education system, so patients can surf the Internet, access e-mail, view educational content, and download movies and play games from their beds, states Todd Hollowell, executive director of information technology at University of Chicago Hospitals, in the article.
