Phone consults with the ED expedites admissions
Hospitalist Leadership Connection, January 31, 2007
An innovative process used at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore connects emergency department (ED) physicians with hospitalists to expedite the admitting process. The result is improved patient throughput, according to an article in the January issue of Hospitalist Management Advisor.
The ED physician, after a phone consult with the hospitalist, writes brief holding orders so that the ED patient can be quickly moved to the designated service. If a bed is available, the patient is admitted in 20 minutes with this process, says Edward Bessman, MD, the director of emergency medicine at Bayview.
Delays in admissions can lead to congested EDs, patient boarding in hallways, and even diversion of patients to other hospitals, which results in a loss of income for the hospital. Bessman is quoted in the article as saying that every hour a patient waits in the ED costs his institution $540 in potential revenue.
