Hospital medicine field continues to grow

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, January 24, 2007

A January 10 article in The Cincinnati Enquirer reported on the proliferation of hospitalists, stating that they now work in about 2,200 of the nation's 5,000 hospitals.

The number of hospitalists has ballooned to roughly 15,000 currently from about 800 in the mid-1990s in both community hospitals and academic medical centers, the article states. Figures from the Society of Hospital Medicine's 2005-2006 survey state that the average salary for a hospitalist is $168,000.

The profession has grown to the point where the American Board of Internal Medicine is developing a certification for hospitalists, according to the article.
