Web site provides MD-only forum for drug info

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, January 24, 2007

A new, free Web site called Sermo (www.sermo.com) provides a forum for physicians to discuss adverse drug reactions, new applications for medications, and other drug-related topics, according to a January 16 article in Long Island Newsday.

The article states that physicians complain that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and pharmaceutical companies wait too long to publicize serious drug reactions. The site creates a mechanism whereby physicians can make their own observations about various drugs.

Launched in October 2006, the site boasts more than 5,000 registered physician users and allows no advertising or pharmaceutical sponsors. Access is limited to physicians only through a system where users' credentials are checked against several databases, Newsday reports.
