Health program targets hospital infection rate

Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell announced a plan to make healthcare available to more residents of his state, according to a December 12 article in The Philadelphia Inquirer. Approximately 10.5% of Pennsylvania's residents-or 1.3 million people-lack health insurance.

The article states that Rendell's proposal, slated for release in January, aims to cut costs in certain areas of the healthcare system, including reducing the number of infections hospital inpatients acquire. The plan also would give nurse practitioners additional responsibility.
