VA hospitals provide EHR model
Hospitalist Leadership Connection, December 27, 2006
Veterans' Affairs (VA) hospitals have taken the lead in addressing issues targeted by quality improvement organizations such as the Institute of Medicine and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, according to an article in the December issue of The Hospitalist, published by the Society of Hospital Medcine (SHM).
The article reported on recent testimony by Kenneth W. Kizer, MD, MPH, CEO, chair of the board of Aliso Viejo, CA-based Medsphere Systems, to Congress regarding the promotion of a national health information infrastructure (i.e., electronic medical records [EMR] and computerized physician order entry). According to Kizer, hospitalists can use the success of EMR at VA hospitals as a model for change.
Kizer is quoted in the article as saying, "Rather than waiting until there is a national technology information infrastructure, which may be years-if not decades-away, you can at least advocate for change in your own hospital."
