JCAHO announces potential 2008 goals
Hospitalist Leadership Connection, December 13, 2006
The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) announced six potential additions to the 2008 National Patient Safety Goals, several of which could directly affect the care hospitalists provide.
The potential goals, requirements, and implementation expectations?now open for field review?include the following:
- New Implementation Expectation under Requirement 1A (patient identifiers): Hospitals must implement an electronic system to assist in identifying patients. The plan must address the type of technology, the scope and time frame for implementation, resource requirements, and an assessment of risk.
- New Requirement 3E: Reduce harm associated with anticoagulants.
- New Goal 16: Recognition and response to changing patient conditions (Essentially, this is a requirement for a rapid response team).
- New Goal 17: Reduce the risk of post-operative complications for patients with sleep apnea.
- New Goal 18: Prevent harm associated with worker fatigue.
- New Goal 19: Prevent catheter misconnections.
