Phone dictation system helps with handoffs

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, November 22, 2006

Hospitalists at Omaha's Methodist Hospital recently adopted a telephone dictation system long used by nurses at the facility to expedite handoffs, according to the November issue of Today's Hospitalist.

At the end of each shift, nurses use the VoiceCare system (sold by Integrated Voice Solutions) to dictate patient reports so colleagues on the following shift can dial in to access the information.

The system required modification for hospitalists because of significant differences in the hospitalists' and nurses' shift patterns, according to the article. With the updates, hospitalists now easily record their dictations, saving time and effort.

Eric Rice, medical director of Methodist's hospitalist group, is quoted in the article as saying that the system is so successful, a 15-minute time limit has been imposed on each hospitalist's handoff recording.
