AHRQ tips promote patient safety

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, November 29, 2006

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) published a new list of evidence-based tips to promote hospital safety. The tips cover a wide range of topics from limiting residents' shifts to adopting interventions that can reduce ventilator-associated pneumonia and catheter-related urinary tract infections.

Other topics addressed include the following:

  • how to reduce the likelihood of fatigue-related mistakes
  • how to ensure safety in intensive care units (ICU)
  • advice for eliminating traditional 30+ hour consecutive shifts by interns working in hospital ICUs
  • advice for using technology to improve clinical care

AHRQ Director Carolyn M. Clancy, MD, presented the ideas in a tipsheet called 10 Patient Safety Tips for Hospitals at the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations' annual patient safety conference held in Chicago on November 16.
