CMS raises RVUs for E&M services
Hospitalist Leadership Connection, November 22, 2006
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), as part of its final physician payment rule for 2007, will significantly increase the work relative value units (RVUs) for many of the evaluation and management (E&M) services that hospitalists provide, according to a Society of Hospital Medicine news alert.
Internal medicine physicians should expect to gain 5% in pay from the changes, which are in line with recommendations from the American Medical Association's Relative Value Update Committee, the news alert states.
However, the payment hike from the increased RVUs could be offset by a possible 5% payment cut in 2007 for all physicians who care for Medicare and Medicaid patients. Congress has yet to rule on the overall 5% cut.
