Pediatric hospitalist programs proliferate

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, November 15, 2006

Hospitalist programs for children-many begun at large academic medical centers-are now becoming common at smaller community hospitals, as these facilites take steps to avoid losing younger and sicker patients to larger medical centers, according to the East Bay (CA) Business Times.

The newspaper recently reported on the opening of a pediatric hospitalist program at Sutter Delta Medical Center in Antioch, CA, reflecting trends nationwide on the growth in numbers of pediatric hospitalists.

Ted Chaconas, MD, director of the pediatric hospitalist program at the Children's Hospital & Research Center of Oakland, CA, is quoted in the article as saying that pediatric hospitalists enable community hospitals to care for children who are more acutely ill than they would otherwise be able to accommodate.
